You’re Fired!
Have I dumped socialism and caring about others, for capitalism and a dog-eat-dog, greed-is-good mentality?
Why, yes! [See Note 1 below] – and where better to look for inspiration on how to run a business (which is what I try to do) than my favourite programme The Apprentice [See Note 2]
[Note 1 – Not really of course, we’re hoping to give 10% of profits from our forthcoming revision guides to charity. The odd thing is, there’s a risk that the charities we offer this to turn us down! I’ll keep you updated, possibly in my next blog.]
[Note 2 – Other programmes may also be my favourite in future blogs – let’s just call it downright lying artistic licence.]
For those who don’t know about The Apprentice, it’s about a bunch of contestants who try to demonstrate their business skills, usually by making more money than their competitors, and each week the person who does least well is fired by Lord Sugar. In the end it’s the last person standing who wins a quarter of a million quid from his bearded Lordship to invest in their business.
I think pretty much every one of those contestants is impressive, despite the way they sometimes come across and the silly things they say. One competitor, Susan Ma, said “Do the French like children?” A silly thing to say and she didn’t win The Apprentice. HOWEVER – Her company which has only been going eight years made over £5,000,000 in 2017/18, and is growing fast.
I’m 42 you know – and too old to go on the show – and I’m not really sure I’d want to. Despite the fact that I’d win, obviously. I’d probably try to sway Sir Alan Lord Sugar by offering him our dyslexia-friendly books at a discount. He’s dyslexic – which is ridiculously common among top entrepreneurs. My favourite Apprentice winner, Alana Spencer, was dyslexic too. In fact I’ll probably write another blog about this strange – or perhaps not so strange – corrolation between dyslexia and business success and making millions.
I’ll stop now. But The Radio Times reckons the new series should air in early October. Ooh, I can’t wait!
